Grants

I have been fortunate to receive multiple creative arts grants over the past few years to help me develop as an author and move my career forward. I recommend you investigate available grants in your area to see what you may be eligible to apply for.

I am very grateful for all the support I have received, via three Regional Arts Development Funds, made possible thanks to the Queensland Government, Arts Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast Council. The most recent of these was for a mentorship with wonderful U.S. freelance kidlit editor, Mary Kole, in 2019.

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Applications for RADF funds open at numerous times during the year. They’re aimed at the development of emerging and professional artists and creative arts workers. For more information about grants available for residents of the Sunshine Coast, check out this link.

SCBWI

I’m an active member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), an international professional organisation for authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults. SCBWI is a network for writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers and other people involved with literature for kids and teens. Chapters of the organisation exist in most states and countries in the world.

Being a member gives me the opportunity to meet with and learn from other creatives, attend relevant events, and utilise a variety of other support and services. It’s a great organisation for anyone looking to create books for children.

12 x 12

If you write or illustrate picture books, I recommend you check out the 12x12 Challenge, founded by Julie Hedlund. It’s a kidlit community I’ve been a part of for a number of years.

12 x 12 is a year-long writing challenge where members aim to write 12 complete picture book drafts, one per month, for each 12 months of the year. In 12 x 12, you’ll get the motivation and accountability you need to get those drafts finished, all with the support of the friendliest writing community on earth.
